You’ve updated your business information in Yext, but your Yelp listings still don’t look right. Hours are inconsistent, categories won’t change, or a field you populated never appears. For marketing teams managing dozens or thousands of locations, these gaps create more than extra work: they can leave customers with inaccurate information and local teams unsure who can fix it.
The Yext and Yelp integration lets eligible businesses send supported listing updates from Yext to Yelp. While Yext centralizes listing management, it doesn’t give your brand complete control over Yelp. What you can update depends on the integration, each location’s eligibility, and Yelp’s own rules. Some changes can flow through Yext; others require direct action in Yelp or access to paid features.
This guide is for enterprise marketers, local SEO teams, and franchise leaders who need to understand those boundaries between Yext & Yelp. We’ll explain what syncs and what doesn’t, where free and paid capabilities differ, and how corporate and franchise teams can coordinate updates. You’ll leave with practical steps for troubleshooting mismatches and keeping your listings consistent across locations.
1. How sync access works for an enterprise business
Yext has three Yelp integration categories: SMB, MEC, and Yelp Knowledge.
- SMB applies to accounts with fewer than five locations.
- At enterprise scale, the applicable integration—MEC or Yelp Knowledge—depends on your brand’s Yelp relationship.
- Yelp Knowledge is Yelp’s enterprise analytics and business-intelligence offering; in Yext’s terminology, its customers receive enterprise-level review access, including up to 200 recent full-text reviews.
Small Business (SMB)
This category is available to small and medium-sized businesses with fewer than five locations. Sync runs without needing a paid relationship with Yelp itself, but review visibility is limited to three truncated (150-character) reviews per listing, and there’s no review response capability.
Mutual Enterprise Client (MEC)
For MEC accounts, Yext can sync only approved locations that have a paid advertising listing on Yelp.
For those organizations on the MEC integration, confirm current eligibility with Yext and Yelp before treating a data mismatch as a Yext configuration issue.
Reviews scale with the same tiering.
MEC and Yelp Knowledge clients see the 200 most recent reviews, full text, versus three truncated reviews on SMB. SMB accounts get a daily scan. For MEC and Yelp Knowledge, Yext’s documentation describes both real-time updates and scheduled scans (weekly for MEC, monthly for Yelp Knowledge), so confirm the current cadence with Yext. Responding to reviews from inside Yext (Review Response) is an add-on available only at this tier, and it requires a Yelp Business Owner account on a corporate domain, linked to Yext, on a listing that’s already claimed. Confirm current review-access and Review Response entitlement with Yext. Due to Yelp’s policies, Yelp reviews also can’t be exported from Yext through reports, email notifications, or the API.
2. Fields that sync from Yext to Yelp
Assuming a location has sync access, 10 core fields make it through to a Yelp listing. Attributes and menus can also sync in some cases (see Section 3).
Each has its own formatting rules. Content that doesn’t meet Yelp’s requirements is typically rejected during manual review.
| Yext Field | Appears on Yelp As | Notes & Restrictions |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Business name on the Yelp listing | Under 64 characters. No ALL CAPS. Avoid special characters other than “&” and “-”. “LLC/Inc.” is typically stripped unless used consistently. |
| Address | Listing address | Under 64 characters. Suite/unit numbers must go in Address Line 2, not Line 1. |
| Phone (Main Phone) | Listed phone number | Only one number syncs. Yelp prefers a local, untracked number over a call-tracking number. A tracked-only number risks rejection. |
| Website / Yelp Website Override | Website link | Must be lowercase, under 255 characters, and cannot contain tracking parameters (no UTMs). Use the Yelp Website Override field to hold a clean URL, separate from the tracked Website URL used elsewhere. |
| Categories 1–3 | Category tags under the business name | Yelp only displays 3. Yext can only set categories when a Yelp listing is first created. It cannot add, remove, or reorder categories on an existing listing. Fixing categories on a live listing requires an edit in a claimed Yelp page; Yext cannot make that change. |
| Description | “From the Business” section | Must be 15–1,500 characters. No phone numbers, emails, or URLs. No consecutive line breaks, under 30% capital letters, max one exclamation point, max six asterisks. |
| Hours (incl. Holiday Hours) | Listed hours of operation | Standard weekly hours plus holiday hours sync. |
| Closed / Hours (Temporarily Closed) | Whether the listing appears in Yelp search | Two distinct behaviors. Temporarily Closed shows a red banner with a reopen date. Permanently Closed doesn’t remove the listing immediately: it’s gradually deprioritized in search but stays reachable via direct link. |
| Business Logo | A photo labeled “from the business owner” | Not visually distinguished from Photo Gallery images once live. A distinct branded logo placement requires Yelp’s paid Upgrade Package or Enhanced Profiles (see Section 4). |
| Photo Gallery | Photos labeled “from the business owner” | Removing a photo through Yext takes 2–3 weeks (escalation to Yelp). Removing directly on Yelp is same-day. |
3. Fields that do not sync to Yelp, or only sync with conditions
The following are editable in Yext but will not appear on Yelp, or only sync under certain conditions:
❌ CTAs
Yelp doesn’t accept CTA syncing from Yext, and it’s not a technical gap. The Call-to-Action button is a paid Yelp feature (part of the Upgrade Package / Enhanced Profiles), so it’s managed entirely on Yelp’s side. Any change requires contacting a Yelp CS representative directly or enabling the paid feature.
❌ Featured Message
Not displayed anywhere on Yelp.
❌ Display URL
Yelp no longer accepts Display URL updates from Yext for any location. Bulk changes require direct outreach to your Yelp Account Manager.
⚠️ Attributes
Yelp’s own attributes (parking, Wi-Fi, outdoor seating, accessibility, price range, attire, reservations, payment options, meals served, etc.) are typically managed in Yelp’s own interface. That said, Yext’s integration documentation separately lists “Attributes” as a syncable field for both SMB and MEC accounts without saying which ones. Confirm with your Yext account team which attributes, if any, sync for your account before assuming they can only be managed in Yelp.
⚠️ Menu URL
Yext can actually sync a Menu URL or a full interactive menu to Yelp. But this only works for accounts enrolled in Yext for Food, and only if no competing menu provider (SinglePlatform, or ordering through GrubHub) is already prioritized on that listing. If a competing provider is active, Yelp displays that provider’s menu over Yext’s no matter what is sent. Check with Yext whether menu sync is enabled for your account.
❌ Social Handles
Not part of the Yelp sync.
4. Yelp’s free and paid features
Separate from whether Yext can sync to a listing at all, Yelp gates certain presentation and analytics features behind its own paid products, on top of any claimed page.
If your brand does not currently have an active paid Yelp relationship, these features won’t be available. We’ve outlined them so you can weigh the cost against the value for your locations.
Free features
- Edit business name, address, phone, website, and hours (the Yext-synced fields, plus manual edits on Yelp directly)
- Respond to reviews and messages
- Upload photos with captions
- Basic analytics: page views, leads, and customer activity
- Appear in Yelp’s organic search results
Free claiming has a per-login limit, not an absolute ceiling. Self-serve claiming caps out at nine locations per Yelp login: after claiming the first location, additional ones are added through “+ Add a Location” up to nine total, and beyond that a second login is needed to claim more.
A business can manage more than nine locations for free by using multiple separate Yelp logins. Yelp notes the drawbacks of this approach: no bulk updates, no aggregate metrics, and permissions that get harder to manage as staff change. For large enterprise brands, paid aggregate access is better suited operationally because it centralizes locations, permissions, reporting, and bulk updates.
Paid features: Upgrade Package or Enhanced Profiles
The self-serve Upgrade Package (around $6/day on average, cancel anytime on daily pricing) is Yelp’s standard offering for single-location or small multi-location businesses. Larger regional and national brands with 11+ locations are eligible for Enhanced Profiles through Yelp for Brands, with custom pricing rather than the self-serve daily rate. Available features vary by eligibility and, for Enhanced Profiles, may depend on the plan or spend tier.
Relevant paid features can include:
- Call-to-Action button: converts page views into calls, messages, and visits
- Removal of competitor ads: free pages can display competitor ads; paid pages don’t
- Distinct branded Logo placement, Slideshow, and Business Highlights badges: Slideshow is custom photo ordering; Logo and Highlights are available at certain ad-spend thresholds under Enhanced Profiles
- Verified License: lets service professionals display a verified license badge on their page. Only available to "eligible categories," and even within those categories, it requires hitting a certain ad-spend level.
- Portfolio: available for eligible categories only
- Yelp Connect posts: only available to businesses with fewer than 75 locations
Paid features: Yelp Ads
Pay-per-click placement in Sponsored Results and on competitor pages. This is a distinct product from the Upgrade Package / Enhanced Profiles. The two are designed to complement each other, not replace one another.
5. Sync behavior and approval process
- Every update pushed to Yelp goes through manual human review. Nothing is instant, and some pushes are rejected if they don’t meet Yelp’s content rules.
- Categories can only be set by Yext when a Yelp listing is first created. Once a listing exists, Yext cannot add, remove, or reorder categories. That has to happen on a claimed Yelp page.
- Removing a photo is faster directly on Yelp (same-day) than through Yext escalation (2–3 weeks).
- Duplicate suppression on Yelp is limited. Yext's own documentation states that Yelp listing suppression is only offered for SMB accounts, not MEC or Yelp Knowledge. Where it is available, Yext scans publishers monthly, flags potential duplicates, and each one has to be submitted for suppression; Yelp merges the duplicate into the primary listing rather than deleting it. Requests go out once a day, and manual review can take up to 4 weeks. For large enterprise brands, duplicates on listings likely need to be flagged directly on Yelp instead.
- If your services through Yext are canceled, all photos and special hours pushed through Yext are removed. Yelp only lets the original source of a photo remove it.
Before you escalate a mismatch
- Wait two weeks. Yelp can take up to two weeks to re-index after a data update. If the listing looks right but Yelp search results or the URL still show old information, give it time before contacting your Yext team.
- Check for a Yelp-side edit. Yext only pushes fields that change. If someone edited a field directly on Yelp, that edit stays until the same field is updated in Yext.
- For MEC accounts, confirm the location is a Yelp advertiser. Open the Yext listing and look under “More Business Info” for “This business is a Yelp advertiser.” If it’s missing, the location may not be included in Yelp’s approval sync list.
- Check the sync status in Yext. If Yelp can’t match the location, opt it out of Yelp sync and then back in. If Yelp matched it to the wrong listing, contact Yext support to create a new listing and revert the bad match. Yelp may still merge the new listing later.
- Confirm the business type is eligible. Yelp doesn’t accept some business types, such as corporate offices, kiosks, ATMs, and departments within a larger store. These locations won’t sync no matter how the data is set up.
6. Yelp options for franchisees
Franchisees can claim or access individual Yelp Business Pages, where account access is available, and interact with them in several ways. Available actions and trade-offs appear below.
Possible franchisee actions
- Report incorrect location details, hours, or closure status to corporate/Yext for correction.
- Provide current, location-specific photos that meet corporate brand standards for approval or publishing.
- Identify locally relevant Yelp attributes for corporate approval.
- Flag duplicate listings, inaccurate user-submitted photos, or inappropriate content for corporate review.
- Monitor reviews and escalate operational issues through the agreed response workflow.
- Respond to reviews only when corporate has explicitly delegated that authority and supplied approved response guidance.
Reviews: an important Yelp policy consideration
Yelp discourages businesses from asking customers for Yelp reviews. Local teams can keep accurate Yelp information visible and welcome unsolicited feedback. If your brand decides to use a small QR code or discreet in-store sign, keep it informational (for example, “Find us on Yelp”) rather than a request for a review. Yelp’s published guidance does not expressly endorse QR-code review prompts, so this should be treated as a brand-policy decision and reviewed periodically against current Yelp guidance. Do not selectively solicit reviews, offer discounts or other incentives, ask only satisfied customers, request a particular star rating, or tell a customer what to write. Those practices can conflict with Yelp’s content guidelines and undermine review trust.
Possible corporate considerations
- Business name, address, phone, website, hours, holiday hours, and closure status.
- Categories and primary business positioning.
- Brand descriptions, logos, approved imagery, and paid Yelp features.
- Review-response policy, escalation rules, and page-access permissions.
- Duplicate-listing suppression and Yext or Yelp enterprise-account activity.
Trade-offs to consider
Direct edits in Yelp can pass Yelp review and override the information currently displayed from Yext; they do not update the Yext Knowledge Graph. This can create inconsistent data, weaken reporting, or cause a local listing to drift from central brand standards. Category changes are especially sensitive: Yext cannot update categories on an existing Yelp listing, so a franchisee edit can be difficult to standardize later across the brand.
Once a listing has gone live on Yelp, Yext doesn't resend the entire record every time something changes — it only pushes the specific field that changed. So if someone edits a listing directly on Yelp (say, changing the business name) and then later a Yext user updates an unrelated field (say, hours) for that same location, Yext will only push the hours update. It will not touch or overwrite the name, because the name wasn't the field that changed in Yext. This is exactly why a manual Yelp-side edit can sit there indefinitely, seemingly "stuck," even while other data keeps updating normally. To bring it back in line, update that same field in Yext.
Account-access considerations
Account-access structures vary. A corporate team may retain direct control of core listing data, categories, branding, paid products, and review responses to maintain consistency; the trade-off is that local corrections and content updates may take longer.
90-day auto-unclaim
Claiming a Yelp page isn't a one-time action that stays claimed forever. If the individual who holds the login for that Yelp Business Owner account doesn't log in for 90 straight days, Yelp may automatically revert the page's status back to "unclaimed," even though a human did claim it originally. This may be an operational risk for any brand where pages are claimed at the corporate level, but no individuals are tasked with logging in regularly.
New listings are not “claimed” automatically
When Yext creates a new listing on Yelp for a location, that listing is live and syncing data, but it is not automatically linked to the brand's Yelp account as "claimed." Someone will still need to claim it directly through Yelp's own interface. This is true even for MEC/Yelp Knowledge accounts using Review Response or Review Monitoring. Yext can only help with claiming if you have Review Response.
7. What to do next: Our recommendations
- Confirm current sync eligibility, review visibility, and Review Response entitlement with Yext for all locations. Without active Yelp paid-advertising eligibility, a location will not sync on the MEC integration.
- Populate the Yelp Website Override field across all of your locations with a clean, tracking-parameter-free URL. Use it when the primary Website field contains tracking parameters.
- Audit the Main Phone field for locations currently using a call-tracking number as primary. Confirm the local/untracked number is what’s feeding Yelp, so numbers aren’t flagged as mismatched.
- Standardize names for all locations and set categories carefully before new listings are created. Yext can continue to sync names, but it can set Yelp categories only when a listing is first created.
- Run a bulk audit of the Closed and Hours (Temporarily Closed) fields, distinguishing Temporarily Closed from Permanently Closed. An incorrect status silently affects search visibility.
- Where descriptions are blank or inconsistent, draft baseline descriptions per location or market.
- Where Yelp categories are already wrong on an existing listing, treat it as a direct Yelp claimed-page fix, not a Yext bulk-edit. Bulk-editing in Yext won’t resolve it.
- Confirm with Yext whether duplicate-listing suppression applies to your brand at all. Yext's documentation states it's offered only for SMB accounts, not its MECs, so larger brands may need to flag duplicate Yelp listings directly on Yelp instead of relying on Yext.
- Schedule time with your Yext account representative to confirm which Yelp capabilities apply. Confirm which Attributes and Menu fields are enabled, whether your account is enrolled in Yext for Food (if you want menus to sync), and whether other Yext capabilities are available for the account.
- Assign someone to log in to each Yelp for Business account at least once every 90 days so claimed pages don’t revert to unclaimed.
